How concerned should I be with sheet rock dust in the a/c-heat return vents?

we've had const done and several rooms had new sheet rock put up. Dust is everwhere (we have been relocated during construction). The contractor tells us he will clean up but no one has mentioned about the duct work. Please advise

You can ask the contractor to do the duct cleaning but if it isn't specifically called out in the contract don't expect him to do it.

You probably be better off just hiring a duct cleaning service if you want them done. The contractor probably covered the ducts in the rooms he was doing the work in so the majority of the dust wouldn't have gotten into the system.

Unless you have a breathing condition the little bit of dust still floating around probably wont even bother you.

Just make sure to check your furnace filter on a weekly basis for a while. It will take a while for it to circulate all the air and dust thru the filter but it will eventually get the majority of it.

When its dirty clean or replace it depending on what type of filter it uses.
Reply:Any respectable contractor should have covered the vents. Are you sure he/she didn't? If they didn't they are responsible, whether it's in the contract or not. If they refuse tell them you will report them to the BBB. No contractor wants complaints on their record. Hopefully, they have already done it.
Reply:make them clean the duct and the blower unit it will plug up your coil for the ac
Reply:You should not only check the furnace filter but the AC coils as well. Some furnace filters will not take out all of the very fine particles and they can adhere to the coils.
Reply:If the a/c was not on during the work the dust would not have gone through the ventilation system. Dust settles but doesn't fly without air forcing it to go into the system. If the vents were not covered the contractor should easily be able to suck the vents out with a shop-vac.

If the a/c was on at anytime during the sheet rock work then that would be a different story. Then you may ask them to have the duct work cleaned. They may or may not be liable for this cost, but you should talk with them and find out facts.
Reply:He should be held responsible for all cleaning concerning dust during construction. Or hold out some payment to do it.
Reply:Have him clean the duct work I dont think Its healthy to breath that stuff, thats why dry wall finishers wear masks. Besides the fact every time the heat -/-a/c comes on you will get residuals depending on how much has infiltrated the duct work.
Reply:Unless it was in your contract, the contractor is generally not responsible for duct cleaning.

Check the fine print.

Their cleanup generally means preparation before %26amp; after application of finishes.

A duct cleaning service runs in the neighborhood of $500

for an average sized home.

Best regards
Reply:Make them clean the duct work or you will stir up drywall dust every time you run the heat and AC... There are Duct Cleaning services that specialize in doing this job.
Reply:I do not allow subs or conttractors to use the A/C wile sanding drywall, but it is powder and when the coil sweats it will self clean unless it is really caked up. Check your airflow and install new filter. Should clean itself after a full load pull down.
